The length of PhD programmes

The length of PhD programmes is governed by Article 3 in Royal Decree 99/2011 of 28th January that governs Official PhD programmes, amended by Royal Decree 576/2023 of 4th July.

The length of PhD programmes depends on students' status: full-time or part-time. In this sense, PhD programmes will run for a maximum of four years full-time and seven years part-time. This timeframe will start from the doctorands’ enrolment date on the programme and finalise on the PhD thesis submission date.

Where doctorands have a disability level equal to or above 33%, PhD programmes shall run for a maximum of six years full-time and nine years part-time.
