Students with foreign degrees

This section is aimed at students with foreign degrees who would like to take official postgraduate studies (Master's or Doctorate) at the UIB. Such students are not required to have their foreign degrees officially recognised by the Spanish education authorities. This admission shall not, in any case, involve the recognition of the prior degree possessed by the interested party or its recognition for any other purposes than access to Doctorate studies. Students with foreign degrees recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Education will follow the pre-registration process undertaken by students with Spanish degrees.

If you are interested in having your foreign degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) officially recognised by the Spanish education authorities, please contact the Spanish Ministry of Education.

If you are interested in having your foreign PhD officially recognised in Spain, please visit the website of Doctoral School of the UIB - section "Declaración de equivalencia".

Students who would like to study official postgraduate studies at the UIB must start a procedure of pre-registration in these studies. The pre-registration procedure is the one whereby a student applies for a place on one or several postgraduate programmes at the UIB. It is made up of the following stages:

2. Access: assessment and resolution

At the Doctoral School of the University of the Balearic Islands (EDUIB) and the Center for Postgraduate Studies (CEP), it shall be studied and verified that the applicant meets the access requirements, that is, that their degree or degrees afford them access to official postgraduate studies at the UIB, and a mail shall be sent to the student with the resolution. The following access requirements shall be taken into account.

Access requirements to Master’s studies
  • University degree issued by a higher education institution belonging to another State within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) enabling access to a Master's degree in this area.
  • Graduates from education systems outside the EHEA. They may access the official Master's studies with no need to validate their degrees, subject to verification by the UIB that the degrees accredit a standard of education similar to the corresponding Spanish official university degrees and that the qualification obtained authorises access to postgraduate degrees in the country issuing the degree. This access shall not, in any case, involve the recognition of the prior degree possessed by the interested party or its recognition for any other purposes than access to Master's degree studies.
Access requirements to Doctorate studies
  • Possession of an official university degree issued within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that enables access to a Master’s degree and having completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits, at least 60 of which must be at Master’s degree level.
  • Possession of a degree obtained in accordance with foreign education systems, with no need for its recognition, subject to verification by the university that this accredits a standard of education similar to the official Spanish Master’s degree and that it authorises access to Doctorate studies in the country issuing the degree. This admission shall not, in any case, involve the recognition of the prior degree possessed by the interested party or its recognition for any other purposes than access to Doctorate studies.

If the access resolution is positive, the CEP and/or the EDUIB shall forward the pre-registration application to the Academic Degree Commission so that the student’s admission to the degree can be assessed and resolved.

If the access resolution is negative, the procedure comes to an end and the student has the right to file the corresponding appeals.

3. Admission: assessment and resolution

Once the student has been found to have access to the studies applied for, the application will be forwarded to the Academic Degree Commission so that the student's admission to the degree can be assessed and resolved. The applicant will be sent a communication with the admission resolution and with the dates when the student must register.

Admitted students who require an official letter of admission issued by the UIB to apply for a student visa at the Spanish embassy or consulate in the country of origin or any other proceeding related to pursue his studies at the UIB, can apply by email <postgrauarrobauib.es>. In the mail they should indicate the information they need to be noted in the letter of admission.

If the admission resolution is negative, the procedure comes to an end and the student has the right to file the corresponding appeals.

Admission requirements

Consult the information in the file of each Master's or Doctorate Degree on the "General Information" tab, "Admission criteria" section of the descriptor.

4. Registration

Once students are admitted on the requested course, they will have a specific deadline for registration, i.e. for master’s programmes, to enrol on the subjects to be taken during the academic year or for PhD programmes, to enrol for academic supervision. In both instances, registration involves students having to pay course fees.

Accepted PhD students will receive an e-mail from the EDUIB containing their registration instructions and deadline.

Accepted master’s students must register online via UIBdigital. Students access their personal account by entering their username (3 letters and 3 numbers) and the password they used for pre-enrolment.

Once in UIBdigital, they need to follow the steps shown on screen, select the subjects for registration and finally choose their payment method.

Important points to bear in mind during the registration process
  • Students need to register on the subjects they will be taking during the entire academic year (first and second semester).
  • Students who are starting a master's programme must register for a minimum 30 ECTS, unless they have been accepted as a part-time student in which case the minimum shall be 24 credits on programmes with limited places or 12 credits on programmes with unlimited places (Decree 44/2016).
  • Students need to pay their registration fees within the set deadline. Failure to do so means the course fee, alongside the late payment supplements, remains pending payment.
  • Students may also query other registration-linked procedures (changes, cancellation, extension, etc.) at this link.
The available payment methods are
  1. Cash invoice/International transfer. In this instance, students may print out the registration invoice and, if they are in Spain, go to any of the Spanish bank branches listed on the invoice to pay the registration fee.
In case they are in a foreign country, they can make an international transfer. In this instance, once registration is finalised, students need to send an e-mail to the CEP (postgrauarrobauib.es) for us to send out the international registration invoice containing the necessary information to make the international transfer. Once the transfer is completed, students need to send their receipt to the same e-mail address. Any applicable banking fees shall be paid by students.
  2. Bank card. If an error occurs when making payment, students need to contact their card issuer since there may be restrictions blocking the payment being processed.
  3. Direct debit. Here, students need to provide their Spanish bank account number.
This option enables students to split the total fee amount into several payments, in accordance with what is set out in the Decree 44/2016 governing public fees for academic and administrative services on current official programmes at the UIB.

5. Presenting original documents

When registration is complete, students undertake to present the original documents they initially provided in digital format during pre-enrolment to the CEP or the EDUIB at the UIB.

Students have 12 months from the date of registration to present their documents in one of the following ways:

  • In-person at the CEP or EDUIB: the original or *certified copies of the documents, in addition to photocopies for filing, should be provided.
  • By post to the CEP or EDUIB: *certified copies of the original documents should be sent in.
