Research plan
What is the research plan?
It is the document that doctorands must submit before the end of their first year on the programme.
It must at least include the methodology to be used and the objectives to be attained, as well as the resources and schedule to achieve them. In addition, it must contain the signatures of the PhD student, and the thesis tutor and supervisor(s), either in handwritten form or in any of the valid electronic signature formats - electronic ID card, natural person certificate issued by the Spanish Royal Mint (FNMT), public employee certificate, or any other electronic signature certificate issued by the certification bodies accepted by the Spanish General State Administration - for approval by the Academic Commission for the PhD Programme in the first annual review.
Where the document includes handwritten signatures, you need to submit the duly signed original to the admin services at the Doctoral School, after notification that the research plan has been approved.
You may modify or add any details to the research plan throughout your stay on the programme (see the 'Can the research plan be modified?' section).
Please bear in mind that some PhD programmes have specific templates for drawing up the research plan. We suggest that you check this with your tutor.
What goes in the research plan?
Students who Started their Programme before the 2023-24 Academic Year
The research plan must at least include:
- Thesis title
- Methodology
- Objectives
- Resources and schedule
- Date
- The handwritten or valid electronic signature (electronic ID card, natural person certificate issued by the FNMT, public employee certificate or any other electronic certificate issued by certification bodies authorised by the Spanish government) of the doctorand, supervisor(s) and tutor.
Please bear in mind that some PhD programmes provide specific templates for drawing up research plans. We suggest you check with your tutor.
Students who Started their Programme from the 2023-24 Academic Year Onwards
The research plan must at least include:
- Thesis title
- Methodology
- Objectives
- Resources and schedule
- Personal training plan: planned training activities to be undertaken throughout the PhD programme (courses, giving seminars, mobility, etc.)
- Date
- The handwritten or valid electronic signature (electronic ID card, natural person certificate issued by the FNMT, public employee certificate or any other electronic certificate issued by certification bodies authorised by the Spanish government) of the doctorand, supervisor(s) and tutor.
Please bear in mind that some PhD programmes provide specific templates for drawing up research plans. We suggest you check with your tutor.
When does this procedure need to be done?
Within twelve months from the first registration and within the set deadline.
How should the research plan be submitted?
Students who first enrolled on the programme in the 2021-22 academic year or later
You need to upload your research plan to Acadèmic > Research and activities plan.
Please follow the instructions in the Student Portal to register your research plan.
Students who first enrolled on the programme prior to the 2021-22 academic year
This is an online procedure via the application: <https://postgrau.uib.es>.
Can the research plan be modified?
You may modify your research plan after registering it where there has been a major change (methodology, objectives, title...).
This change may be requested at any time; prior to or together with the annual review, and always before depositing the thesis.
Students who first enrolled on the programme in the 2021-22 academic year or later
Any changes made to the research plan must be registered.
If you wish to modify your research plan, please follow the instructions in the 'How should the research plan be submitted?' section.
Students who first enrolled on the programme prior to the 2021-22 academic year
This is an online procedure via the application: <https://postgrau.uib.es>.
Is it possible to change the title of the thesis included in the research plan?
Students who first enrolled on the programme in the 2021-22 academic year or later
If you wish to change the title of your research plan without modifying any other aspect you will need to register your research plan again, in the same way as explained above.
This change may be requested at any time; prior to or together with the annual review, and always before depositing the thesis.
Students who first enrolled on the programme prior to the 2021-22 academic year
This is an online procedure via the application: <https://postgrau.uib.es>.
In this case, you must submit the favorable report signed by the directors.
